Furnace Problems Exposed! - Homeowners Complain About High Utility Bills.

A vary extensive study was conducted by Proctor Engineering in conjunction with Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E). They investigate the potential energy savings in residential air conditioners and forced air gas furnaces installed in the Fresno, California area. The Fresno study was targeted at high utility bill complaint customers.

The objectives of the study were to:

  • Identify the major problems with existing residential air conditioning installations
  • Identify the major problems with existing furnace installations
  • Determine what actions could be taken to correct those problems
  • Estimate the potential savings from those actions

The results are startling. Here is a summary of their findings:

Fan Off Temperature above 90º F

Steady-state efficiency less than 75%

Gas leak

Low heat anticipator setting (caused short cycles)

Cracked heat exchanger

This study validates that ignoring your heating system until it fails is not in your best interest.

So, what does this mean to your home in Michigan? The Comfort Institute made this commentary: "Although this study was completed in California in 1990, the facts are still very relevant today all across North America."
